Q. Can I leave my child alone at the library?

Library staff encourage caregivers to accompany minors to the library as they do not have the authority to take responsibility for children left unattended.  While acknowledging that children mature at different rates, the following provisions are based on guidelines provided by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services:

(Abbreviated guidelines - a link with the entire policy is provided below)

1. Children 8 years of age and younger should not be left alone at the library.  Responsible parents or caregivers must remain within sight or sound range of their children at all times to ensure safety and appropriate behavior

2. Children between the ages of 9 and 12, based upon maturity and ability to act in accordance with the Code of Conduct, may use the library unattended.  Children in this age range must be willing and able to communicate parent/caregiver name and telephone number upon request.

3. Children ages 13 and older who comply with the Code of Conduct may use the library without parent/caregiver supervision
